Bishop Benjamin visits St. Innocent of Alaska Church of Livermore, California.
Oct 10th, 2009 • Section: Featured, Hierarchical VisitsOn Saturday and Sunday, October 3 & 4, His Grace, Bishop Benjamin visited the St. Innocent of Alaska Church of Livermore, California. The mission was originally established in 1991 in Fremont, CA and met in the Spanish Mission San Jose that was visited by St. Innocent himself during a visit to California in the early 19th century. It is said the Franciscan fathers were given a barrel organ as a gift that St. Innocent made with his own hands. In 2004 the membership of the mission decided to move to the Livermore area, but a small group elected to remain behind in Fremont and the St. Christina Mission was born and stills serves the Orthodox in the Fremont/San Jose area.
St. Innocent Church presently meets in a commercial space. Archpriest Leo Arrowsmith and his parishioners have transformed their store front space into a rather pleasant temporary temple. Fr. Leo has written most of the icons himself. The choir is under the very capable direction of Susan Anderson. Two readers, Barry Basil Leece and Wesley John Smith were tonsured Sunday morning just before the beginning of the Liturgy.
