Diocesan Deacon Serves with Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria

His Holiness Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, recently consecrated an Orthodox temple in Uganda, and a deacon from our diocese had the blessing to serve with him and the many other clergy assembled for the event. Like many missions in our Diocese of the West, Saint Sophia Orthodox Church in Luwafu, Uganda (in the suburbs of the capital city of Kampala) is a parish that has long hoped to have a consecrated temple. Patriarch Theodoros made the long journey to preside at its consecration. He was joined by other African hierarchs including Metropolitan Jonah of Uganda, Metropolitan Narkissos of Sudan, and Bishop Innocentios of Rwanda. Celebrating the Divine Liturgy with them were more than twenty priests and deacons, including Deacon James Ferrenberg from Poulsbo, Washington.

Deacon James was on hand as part of his international work with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. As a researcher there, he makes regular trips to Uganda to assist in the development of a cancer center there. In addition to serving among the local clergy in Kampala during his stays, he is also visits the Saint Nicholas Uganda Children’s Fund there. That organization was established by Orthodox Christians Peter and Sharon Georges. Recently, Dn. James’s own parish, Saint Elizabeth Orthodox Church in Poulsbo voted to send regular donations to the Children’s Fund.
