On Thursday, December 31, 2020, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America has issued an encyclical entitled, “We Rejoice Even in Tribulation”: An Encyclical of Hope. This work, done out of love and gratitude for the faithful intends to be an encyclical of encouragement for the year to come. In this encyclical, the Synod seeks to find meaning in a year that has been marked by a political polarization, a worldwide pandemic, economic uncertainty, and civil unrest. It ultimately calls the faithful to a renewed faith and hope in Jesus Christ, and service to one another. The encyclical is available as a PDF download and the printed version will be mailed to all parishes, monasteries, and institutions of the Orthodox Church in America in January 2021.

The Diocese of the West is the geographical district of the Orthodox Church in America consisting of the Western United States. The diocese has active parishes in Montana, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii. San Francisco is home to the diocese’s cathedral, Holy Trinity, as well as the Chancery offices. The diocese is led by His Grace Vasily, Bishop of San Francisco and the West.
