Though unexpectedly cool for the locals, one could not have asked for a sunnier day in Las Vegas. It was a day full of anticipation for many of the clergy wives in the Diocese of the West who had never met before or were about to have the opportunity to connect once again. On this bright Wednesday afternoon, seventeen of us gathered outside of St. Paul the Apostle Orthodox Church in front of the outdoor shrine to the Mother of God. It was a fitting gathering place, as if meant to be there just for this occasion. We were going to branch out from the Diocesan Assembly to have our own time together. Already, Father John and Matushka Elizabeth Dresko, along with the help of parishioners, had tirelessly prepared for the assembly, and then kept the flow of its agenda moving forward, ensuring an enjoyable and fruitful time for all. It was remarkable to witness the love and support for clergy wives from these same individuals, some of whom chauffeured us to the Dresko home.
There was much comfort in going to the home of one of our “fellow sisters,” which is what Matushka Liz endearingly called us when she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to host us. No sooner had we entered her home than she asked us to kick back and relax; there were helpers, so we would not have to lift a finger — a blessed opportunity to really connect with others. We spread out, some in the living room, others sitting outdoors by the pool. Our group ranged across ages and experiences. Some were excited for retirement, while others were just beginning the journey. We spoke of joys and sorrows, anticipations and anxieties. I heard wives reassuring one another, saw them laughing with each other, and even hugging. For anyone, good food and drink, and comfortable surroundings makes for a good time. For clergy wives it makes for a precious time.
Diocesan Assemblies, like All American Councils, offer us opportunities to reconnect with and renew the path God has called us to. As we experienced this last month, they are wonderful opportunities to support our husband’s ministries while building up our sisterhood.
