Bishop Daniel elected Bishop of Chicago and the Midwest

Holy Synod elects His Grace Bishop Daniel as Bishop of Chicago and the Midwest.

On Monday, July 18, a few hours before the opening of the 20th All-American Council, the Diocese of the Midwest convened a special assembly, under the presidency of His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon, to consider an episcopal nomination following the falling asleep of Archbishop Paul of blessed memory. The Diocesan assembly nominated His Grace Bishop Daniel of Santa Rosa who has been serving as Locum Tenens of the Diocese over the last few months.

Later that day, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America, meeting in a Special Summer 2022 Session under the presidency of Metropolitan Tikhon, canonically elected Bishop Daniel, formerly Bishop of Santa Rosa and Auxiliary to the Diocese of the West, Bishop of Chicago and the Midwest.

July 2006, His Grace, Bishop Daniel — then Archpriest David — was transferred to the Diocese of the West and appointed Rector of Saints Peter and Paul Church, Phoenix, AZ and in October 2006 he was elected as a member of the Diocesan Council. On October 21, 2014, the Holy Synod elected him to serve as auxiliary to His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin of San Francisco and the West as Bishop of Santa Rosa, CA. He was consecrated to the episcopacy on January 24, 2015. He was officially appointed as Chancellor of the Diocese of the West, October 10, 2017.

His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin has welcomed the news of His Grace’s election as Bishop of Chicago and the Midwest with great joy for that Diocese and the Orthodox Church in America as a whole and has expressed his great confidence in Bishop Daniel’s continuing episcopal ministry. His Eminence will further address the administration of the Diocese of the West at its Assembly scheduled for Wednesday evening, July 20, at the site of the All-American Council in Baltimore.
